Delivered working and ready to use.

The bouillotte lamp takes its name from a French card game played late into the evening, when a table needed steady light that wouldn't dazzle the players seated around it. Its solution was elegant: a low cluster of candle arms, gathered close to the table's surface, topped with a shade that could be raised or lowered as the night wore on. By the nineteenth century, the form had outgrown the card table entirely, becoming a fixture of studies, libraries, and drawing rooms across France.

This example, French, nineteenth century, follows that form in full three-arm scale. Curved brass arms rise from a leaf-carved central stem, each ending in a candle socket, all set on a circular tray base finished with a beaded and foliate rim. Note how the acanthus leaf carving on the stem runs in continuous, overlapping bands rather than a single flat repeat — the kind of layered relief that separates a well-modeled nineteenth-century casting from a later, simplified reproduction. A fabric shade sits above, doing the work it always has: softening three points of light into one warm glow, with light staining consistent with its age.

Whoever lit this lamp before you kept it well. The brass carries an honest, uneven patina built up over more than a century of handling, with no losses to the arms or relief work. Delivered working and ready to use.

The bouillotte lamp takes its name from a card game. Bouillotte was the fast, fashionable gambling game of late eighteenth-century France, played into the small hours — and it needed a lamp of its own: candles set low in a dished base that doubled as a tray for chips, under a metal shade that could be lowered along the central stem as the candles burned down, keeping the flames masked and the light on the cards. The shade lowers along the stem — as the candles burned down, the light stayed just above the flames. It is one of the cleverest lighting designs France ever produced, which is why it never went out of production.

This lamp is French, in the Louis XVI style, attributed to the nineteenth or early twentieth century: two scrolled arms with fluted candle sockets on beaded drip pans, springing from a fluted central column that rises from a dished, gadroon-edged circular base, the adjustable shade in tôle painted a deep green, the stem finished with a cast pinecone finial. Slide the shade on its ratchet and the whole design explains itself — every part, from the dished tray to the masking shade, is the anatomy of a card table at midnight. The lamp is electrified with two lights under wax-drip sleeves, fully checked through our workshop before dispatch, fitted with the appropriate plug or adapter for your country, and delivered working and ready to use.

The tôle shade carries its age openly — the green paint worn and marked, with losses at the rim showing metal beneath — and the metal base has mellowed to a soft, even tone; nothing has been prettified, as the photographs show. It belongs on a desk, a library table, or a sideboard.

The lamp stands sixty-one centimetres in metal with its tôle shade, checked and ready to use. That practical design became a recognizable style in its own right, still reproduced long after candles gave way to electricity. Its green tole shade slides along a slender support rod, a detail that let the shade travel up or down to shield the eyes exactly where light was needed. It evokes the atmosphere of a compact, well-appointed Empire-style interior, where a lamp had to be both useful and unobtrusive, elegant enough to sit on a small table without overwhelming it.

The lamp has a shaped oval gilt bronze base, from which two candle arms with faux candle sleeves extend on either side, rising to a green tole shade with a pierced or scalloped lower edge. The deep red on this shade, banded with a fine gilt line near the rim, sits squarely in that tradition — durable painted metal standing in for the fabric shades used elsewhere on the same lamp form.

Below the shade, the brass base carries the two-light bouillotte configuration in a fluted, cross-hatched central stem, with curved arms ending in engraved bobeches around each candle-style socket. As the candles burned down, a player would turn a key to lower the shade with them, keeping the flame's glare out of everyone's eyes without anyone needing to get up from the table. The silhouette outlived the game itself, becoming one of the most enduring and recognizable forms in French lighting.

This lamp, French in style and circa 1950s, carries that silhouette faithfully. Two brass sockets rise from a rectangular base finished with a beaded edge and set on four small feet, and a red tole shade — painted metal trimmed in gold — slides along the central stem exactly as the original design intended. Note how the shade's height adjusts independently of the bulbs beneath it, the mechanical detail that separates a true working bouillotte lamp from a fixed-shade lookalike; a small piece of period function still doing its job today. Delivered working and ready to use.

The bouillotte lamp earned its place in the French interior not by changing but by being right from the beginning. Invented for the card table in the late eighteenth century, its logic — a metal shade directing all the light downward, a stem that adjusts as the candles burn, a base weighted enough to sit stable on a playing surface — proved so considered that it moved from the gaming salon into the library, the desk, and the drawing room without alteration. The twentieth-century French lamp houses that kept it in production understood they were working with a form that did not need improving, only making well.

This lamp is French, twentieth century, Collange France, in brass with the original blue-green tole shade. The base is a circular platform in warm patinated brass, from which a turned column rises — chased at the capital with acanthus leaves — to the two candle arms that extend horizontally on either side, each ending in a bobèche and socket. Above the arms, the shade suspension rises to a scroll-and-ring handle at the crown, the brass cradle holding the drum shade at a fixed height above the candles. The shade is the deep blue-green lacquer of the classic bouillotte tradition, its upper face decorated with a running chevron frieze in gilt — the restrained ornament that gives the piece its period character without overloading it. The brass throughout has the warm, unpolished patina of a piece kept and used rather than displayed and ignored. The shade lowers along the stem as candles would burn down, keeping the light always just above the flames — the mechanism that made the bouillotte indispensable to anyone who read or worked by lamplight.

The brass is sound and warm across the base and arms; the shade is clean with some light wear consistent with age, as photographed. It arrives inspected and tested before dispatch, rewired where needed, and delivered working and ready to use, plug adapted to your country at no charge.

It arrives professionally packed and fully insured.
