The mounts looked backward — scrolling arms, laurel and acanthus in the Louis taste — while the shades looked forward, in the mottled, colour-saturated glass of the era. The arrangement had a practical genius: the bell-form tulip hangs mouth-down from a curved arm, pouring light onto the page while the glass glows like a lantern above it.

This lamp is French, its scrolled arm and shaped base in gilt bronze cast with foliate ornament, husks, and beading in the Louis XVI taste, rising from a plinth of deep red mottled marble. The shade is the centrepiece: a bell-form tulip in mottled glass, vivid orange streaked with tortoiseshell darks and finishing in a violet-blue ruffled rim, signed by hand and marked Reims. Hold the shade to the light — the colour sits inside the glass in clouds, worked between layers while hot, not painted on the surface, which is how the good French houses of the period got that depth no coating reproduces. This design bends a single flat band of brass into a U — from the stepped base up and over to carry the shade — so the lamp's entire structure is one continuous gesture, with the switch set into a cube at the heart of it. The half-cylinder shade pivots on its mount, tilting the light onto the page and nowhere else: the bankers lamp rethought by the machine age.

This lamp is attributed to the 1930s, in brass throughout and notably heavy for its size: a stepped rectangular base carrying a cube housing the push-button switch, from which the broad U-form arm sweeps up to the pivoting half-cylinder shade. Pick it up before you place it — the weight is the period speaking, solid brass where later decades would substitute folded sheet over filler, and it is what lets a small lamp with a cantilevered shade sit rock-steady under daily handling. Unlike the fixed column lamp or the wall sconce, it solved a working problem: the reader, the writer, the draughtsman needed light that could follow them — raised or lowered, swung left or right, directed precisely where the work was. The best French examples paired the mechanical intelligence of the articulated stem with a shade in pâte de verre, the glass paste technique that the great French studios had developed at the turn of the century specifically because its diffused, warm light was easier on the eye than clear glass or bare bulb.

This lamp is French, mid-twentieth century, in polished brass with a signed Vianne pâte de verre shade. The base is a weighted circular drum — stable enough to hold the articulated stem at any extension — from which a telescoping column rises, adjustable in height by a side-mounted locking collar, and crowned with a ring handle for repositioning. From the column, a gooseneck arm sweeps outward and curves downward to the socket, the arm itself adjustable left and right so that the light can be directed independently of the stem height. The shade is a tulip form in amber pâte de verre, signed Vianne — the Vianne glassworks in the Lot-et-Garonne, which produced art glass shades for the French lighting trade throughout the mid-century, their work recognisable by the warmth and slight translucency of the paste and the clean, unflashy forms they favoured. Note how the amber of the shade deepens toward the base and lightens at the rim — the graduation that results from the pâte de verre process, in which the glass paste is built up in layers of varying density, and the detail that no pressed or blown glass can replicate.

Whoever kept this lamp before you gave it a good life. It closely matches the published Condor lamp, designed by Hans Von Klier and produced by Bilumen in Italy in the 1980s, though no maker's label is visible in the photographs provided to confirm this specific example. A counterbalanced arm like this is doing real mechanical work, not just decorative articulation — a weighted joint at the base is calculated to offset the weight of the lamp head at every angle, so the arm holds any position you set it to without a locking screw, which is why this style of lamp could be repositioned one-handed even while switched on and hot.

Condition is very good. Lit, the globe throws a warm sparkle across the surface below.

The lamp is made of patinated metal, with a tapering arm that curves forward at the top and a stepped rectangular base. A push switch sits at the front of the base. The globe is clear glass, moulded with spiralling rows of small raised dots that scatter the light. Desk lamps of the 1930s were often made this way, with an arched arm so the light falls on the work in front of you, not in your eyes.

The lamp is in very good vintage condition. The glass globe is a later replacement, but an older one. Before it leaves us, it will be fully rewired in our workshop. Look after it, and it will keep doing its job for years. It suits a desk, a bureau or a bedside table.

Key points: an Art Deco desk lamp in patinated metal, with an arched arm, a stepped base and a clear patterned glass globe.

DETAILS

Size: Height 30 cm (11.8 in) — about the height of a wine bottle
Material: patinated metal, clear moulded glass
Style-Period: Art Deco style · 1930s to 1940s
Shipping: professionally packed, fully insured, worldwide · we handle the paperwork and pay all import duties · nothing to settle on delivery
Electrical: fully rewired in our workshop before dispatch · US, UK or EU plug fitted at no extra charge · delivered working and ready to use
Condition: very good vintage condition · glass globe is a later replacement
Lampshade: Glass globe included
Returns: accepted within 30 days

Vintage Art Deco Desk Lamp, Chrome-Tone and Copper-Tone Metal with Tilting Saucer Shade, Machine Age Style

Polished chrome and warm copper meet in a wide saucer-shaped shade, topped with a small copper ball. On a desk, it looks like something from a 1930s ocean liner.

The lamp has a wide, conical shade in chrome-tone metal, with a copper-tone rim and a stepped top crowned by a copper-tone ball. The shade tilts, so the light can be aimed where it's needed. It sits on a tapering chrome-tone stem ringed with copper-tone bands, above a round stepped copper-tone base. In the 1930s, designers borrowed smooth curves and polished metal from aeroplanes, cars and ships. This look, often called Machine Age or Streamline style, made everyday objects look fast and modern.

The lamp is in good vintage condition.
