It’s Helios, the ancient sun god, in the form found on Roman silver and coins. Slender plant stems rise on either side of him, a band of tiny pendant buds runs beneath the flared rim, and the lower body is finely fluted like a classical column. Two small looped handles curl out at the waist, and the cup stands on a smooth, flared pedestal foot. Inside, a warm gilt lining glows against the rich chocolate-brown patina outside. Recreating the luxury vessels of antiquity was a speciality of the great Paris foundries in the 19th century.
