antique-19th-century-bronze-bas-relief-57232
Antique 19th Century Bronze Bas-Relief Plaque, Drunken Silenus Supported by Two Satyrs Under a Grapevine Arch, Bacchanal

The old wine god’s companion has clearly had too much to drink. Silenus, bearded and crowned with grapes, sags heavily between two goat-legged satyrs who struggle to hold him upright, while his pan pipes lie forgotten on the ground. The figures stand out in deep, almost sculptural relief, every muscle and curl of goat fur crisply defined. They’re framed by a pair of gnarled vine trunks whose branches arch overhead, hung with leaves and heavy bunches of grapes. Crossed thyrsus staffs are tied with a ribbon at the crown. The design follows the playful bacchanal scenes of the 18th-century French sculptor Clodion, and a deep, dark patina gives it a rich, dramatic presence. At over 16 inches tall, it makes a striking wall piece for a dining room, a wine cellar or a library.

Condition: Good Antique Condition, with a deep, natural patina and light wear consistent with age, as pictured.

Dimensions & Materials

Height: 16.5 in (42 cm)
Width: 12.7 in (32.3 cm)
Material: Bronze
Includes: One bas-relief plaque

Historical Period: After a model by Clodion; circa 19th century.

Shipping & Duties: Every piece is hand-wrapped, securely packed and fully insured for its journey to you, wherever you are in the world.
