antique-19th-century-bronze-grand-tour-10674
Antique 19th Century Bronze Grand Tour Inkwell with Three Reclining Stags, Gadrooned Urn on Triangular Base with Hoof Feet

Three stags rest back to back at the heart of this inkwell, legs folded beneath them and heads raised alert, their branching antlers sweeping up to cradle a classical urn. The urn is gadrooned around its belly, with a broad flared rim, and it once held the ink for a gentleman’s writing desk. The stags lie on a triangular base with gently curved sides, raised on three small cast hoof feet. Every detail is finely modelled, from the soft muzzles and pricked ears to the tines of the antlers. The bronze has a mellow, time-worn patina with darker tones in the recesses. Souvenirs like this were brought home by travellers on the Grand Tour of Italy. Today it makes a handsome desk piece, a pen or matchstick holder, or a small sculpture for a library shelf.

Condition: Good Antique Condition, with a natural, uneven patina and wear consistent with age, as pictured.

Dimensions & Materials

Height: 4.5 in (11.5 cm)
Maximum width: 7.9 in (20 cm)
Weight: 3 lb (1.35 kg)
Material: Bronze
Includes: One inkwell

Historical Period: Grand Tour, Neo-Renaissance style; circa 19th century.

Shipping & Duties: Every piece is hand-wrapped, securely packed and fully insured for its journey to you, wherever you are in the world.
