antique-19th-century-french-bronze-59710
Antique 19th Century French Bronze Sparrow Paperweight, Naturalistic Fallen Bird with Folded Wings and Curled Claws, Desk

This small sparrow lies on its back with its wings folded loosely at its sides, its tiny clawed feet curled inward and its head tipped back. It’s a quiet, tender study of a fallen bird, in the naturalistic tradition beloved by 19th-century French animaliers. Every detail is closely observed: the layered breast feathers, the barred flight feathers of the wings, the scaly, wrinkled legs and the fine little beak. The warm, coppery patina deepens to dark brown in the recesses and brightens on the feathers’ edges. Small, heavy and perfectly sized for the hand, it was made as a desk paperweight, and today it’s a treasured curiosity for a writing desk, a library or a cabinet.

Condition: Very Good Antique Condition.

Dimensions & Materials

Length: 5.1 in (13 cm)
Weight: 10.6 oz (300 g)
Material: Patinated bronze
Includes: One paperweight

Historical Period: French animalier, naturalistic school; circa late 19th century.

Shipping & Duties: Every piece is hand-wrapped, securely packed and fully insured for its journey to you, wherever you are in the world.
