antique-19th-century-gilt-bronze-match-44709
Antique 19th Century Gilt Bronze Match Holder, Young Boy Fishing with Rod and Fish on Reed-Covered Bank, Smoker’s Pyrogene

A barefoot boy stands proudly on a riverbank, a little fishing rod in one hand and the other arm raised in triumph, while his catch dangles from the line beside him. He’s cast in warm brown patinated bronze, with rolled-up trousers and a loose shirt, set against a bright gilt bank of rocks, reeds and broad leaves that rise behind him. In the 19th century this was a pyrogène, a gentleman’s smoking accessory. The bank holds matches upright, and the textured surface was used to strike them. It’s charmingly complete, with the rod, line and small fish all still present, which is unusual for these pieces. Today it makes a delightful desk curiosity, a gift for a keen angler or a treasured piece in a cabinet.

Condition: Good Antique Condition, complete with rod, line and fish.
