antique-19th-century-grand-tour-bronze-35460
Antique 19th Century Grand Tour Bronze Statuette of Narcissus or Dionysus, After the Pompeii Original, Dark Green Patina

He stands with his head tilted down and one hand raised, as if listening to something just out of sight, a crown of flowers in his curls and a fawn skin slung over his shoulder. This little bronze reproduces one of the most famous statues found at Pompeii, discovered in the House of Narcissus on the Vico del Balcone Pensile. It was long admired as Narcissus gazing at his reflection, and it’s now displayed at the Naples Archaeological Museum as Dionysus. Travellers on the Grand Tour of Italy brought home small copies like this one as souvenirs of the buried city. It’s finely cast, down to his laced high sandals and the round base edged with leaves, and covered in a deep, almost black green patina. Small and evocative, it’s a lovely piece for a library shelf, a desk or a cabinet of curiosities.

Condition: Good Antique Condition, with a dark green natural patina and light wear to the high points consistent with age, as pictured.

Dimensions & Materials

Height: 5.3 in (13.5 cm)
Material: Bronze
Includes: One statuette

Historical Period: Grand Tour souvenir, after the ancient Roman original from Pompeii; circa 19th century.

Shipping & Duties: Every piece is hand-wrapped, securely packed and fully insured for its journey to you, wherever you are in the world.
