antique-19th-century-grand-tour-drunken-89480
Antique 19th Century Grand Tour Drunken Silenus Statue, Dancing with a Snake, After the Pompeii Original, Patinated on Base

Silenus, the old companion of Bacchus, staggers mid-dance with one arm flung high, gripping a writhing snake whose scaly body curls around his fist, while his other hand swings low as if snapping his fingers to the music. His head is crowned with vine leaves and heavy clusters of grapes, his long beard tumbles over his chest, and a loose cloth is knotted at his hips. He leans back with the unsteady joy of a long night of wine. The figure reproduces a celebrated ancient bronze found at Pompeii, now in the Naples Archaeological Museum, and small copies like this were brought home by travellers on the Grand Tour of Italy. He stands on a round base engraved around its edge with zigzags, scrolls and bunches of grapes. At over 15 inches tall, it’s a lively, characterful piece for a library, a bar or a cabinet.

Condition: Good Antique Condition, with old damage to the raised arm: a crack across the forearm below the hand and a small chip near the elbow.
