antique-barbedienne-two-tone-bronze-60180
Antique Barbedienne Two-Tone Bronze Skyphos Cup with Ivy Leaves and Berries, After an Ancient Roman Silver Cup, Late 1800s

Broad ivy leaves wrap the bowl of this cup in deep relief, their edges curling and overlapping, with small clusters of berries tucked between them. The design follows the silver drinking cups of ancient Rome, which 19th-century collectors admired in the museums of Naples. Two ring handles with flat thumb plates and curved spurs rise on either side, finished in warm gilding to match the beaded rim, the gilt interior and the slim pedestal foot. The bowl itself is a deep, almost black patina, lifted to copper on the leaf edges. It’s a fine example of the two-tone bronzes made by the great Paris foundries, and lovely on a desk, a library shelf or a mantel.

Condition: Good Antique Condition, with wear to the patina near the rim showing lighter metal, and light marks to the gilding, consistent with age, as pictured.

Dimensions & Materials

Height: 5.9 in (15 cm)
Material: Patinated and gilt bronze
Includes: One cup

Historical Period: After an ancient Roman model; circa late 19th century.

Shipping & Duties: Every piece is hand-wrapped, securely packed and fully insured for its journey to you, wherever you are in the world.
