A serpent coils tightly around the stump beneath its clawed feet. Every surface is finely detailed: layered feathers on the wings, scaled skin on the chest, a rough, rocky ground at the base. The gilding glows warm gold, with darker tones in the recesses, set against a solid black base with the scene mounted on an oval gilt plinth. Half dragon, half demon, it’s the kind of fantastical creature that fascinated the Gothic revival of the Second Empire.
