egyptian-revival-style-seated-sphinx-76472
Egyptian Revival Style Seated Sphinx Figure, Dark Patinated Metal, Nemes Headdress, Former Clock or Furniture Mount

Half lion, half woman, and crowned with a pharaoh's headdress, this small sphinx sits upright and watchful. Its dark, smooth surface gives it the calm of an ancient guardian. It is a small figure with a long history of meaning behind it.

The figure is cast in dark brown patinated metal. It shows a seated sphinx with a woman's face and breast, a lion's body and paws, and a striped nemes headdress with a cobra rising at the brow. Two small holes on the side suggest it was once fixed to a larger piece, such as a clock or a piece of furniture. Napoleon's campaign in Egypt set off a craze for sphinxes, pharaohs and lotus flowers in French decorative arts, a taste known as Retour d'Égypte.

The figure is in good vintage condition, with two small fixing holes on the side. Its dark patina and fixing holes are part of its history, and they stay. On a desk, a bookshelf or in a cabinet of curiosities, it works as a paperweight or a small Egyptian Revival accent.

The piece: a seated sphinx in dark patinated metal with a nemes headdress, weighing about 470 g (1.0 lb).

DETAILS

Size: Height about 9 cm (3.5 in) · Length to follow — a little shorter than a coffee mug
Material: patinated metal
Style-Period: Empire Egyptian Revival style
Weight: about 470 g (1.0 lb)
Shipping: professionally packed, fully insured, worldwide · we handle the paperwork and pay all import duties · nothing to settle on delivery
Condition: good vintage condition; two small fixing holes on the side
Returns: accepted within 30 days
