Each smooth column is hollow, built to house the patented Astéare system, a spring mechanism that pushed the candle upward as it burned, so the flame always stayed at the same height. Each one is proudly stamped “Astéare – Brevet d’Invention” (patent of invention) on the shaft. Below, the column rises from a sculptural tripod base of curling acanthus leaves, scrolls and rosettes, set on a three-sided plinth with gently curved sides. A dark bronze patina with warm brass glowing through on the rims and high points gives them a quiet, scholarly character.
