pair-of-antique-napoleon-iii-two-tone-74162
Pair of Antique Napoleon III Two-Tone Bronze Candlesticks with Climbing Salamanders, Branch Stems, Lily Cups and Acorn Tripods

A little gilt salamander creeps head-first down the stem of each candlestick, its body curled around a gnarled branch, past a tiny snail clinging to the bark. The stems rise from a gilded leafy cup, catching drips like an upturned flower, and are crowned with a dark lily-shaped candle cup with pointed petals curling outward. Each stands on a tripod of three scrolling feet, cast with leaves and hung with gilt acorns and oak sprays. The contrast of near-black patina and warm gilding picks out every creature and leaf. Naturalistic pieces like this, full of small living details, were a delight of the Second Empire. They make a wonderful pair for a mantel, a library or anyone who loves a curiosity.

Condition: Good Antique Condition.

Dimensions & Materials (each candlestick)

Height: 10.2 in (26 cm)
Material: Patinated and gilt bronze
Includes: Two candlesticks

Historical Period: Napoleon III; circa 1850–1870.

Shipping & Duties: Every piece is hand-wrapped, securely packed and fully insured for its journey to you, wherever you are in the world.
