pair-of-antique-vietnamese-bronze-22748
Pair of Antique Vietnamese Bronze Figures, Villagers in Conical Hats with Shoulder Poles, Water Buckets and Firewood, c. 1900

Two villagers set off along a country road, each balancing a long pole across one shoulder in the traditional way. The woman carries a pair of wooden water buckets, one hanging from each end of her pole on fine metal hangers. Her companion carries two heavy bundles of gnarled firewood. Both wear wide conical hats (nón lá), finely ribbed to show the woven palm leaves, along with long buttoned tunics and loose trousers, and they walk barefoot on round bases. It’s a quiet, dignified scene of everyday rural life in Vietnam, cast with care down to the knots in the wood and the tiny fingers gripping the poles. A deep brown patina, rubbed lighter on the high points, gives them a warm, aged glow. Together they make a charming pair for a bookshelf, a desk or a cabinet.

Condition: Good Antique Condition.

Dimensions & Materials (each figure)

Height: about 10.2 in (26 cm)
Width across pole: about 6.3 in (16 cm)
Hat diameter: about 3.1 in (8 cm)
Material: Solid patinated bronze
Includes: Two figures, with two removable buckets

Historical Period: Vietnamese bronze; circa late 19th to early 20th century.

Shipping & Duties: Every piece is hand-wrapped, securely packed and fully insured for its journey to you, wherever you are in the world.
