pair-of-bronze-mirror-candle-sconces-41977
Pair of Bronze Mirror Candle Sconces, Louis XV Rocaille Style, Bevelled Rectangular Mirrors and Floral Openwork, 41 cm

Before candles burned cleanly, a room lit by them stayed dim, however many you lit. Placing a mirror behind each flame was a simple solution: the glass threw the light back into the room, so one candle could do the work of two. Mirror sconces became a fixture of European interiors for this reason, and they work exactly the same way today.

This pair of candle sconces is in the Rococo style. Each has a rectangular mirror plate with a bevelled edge, set in a tall frame of pierced gilt metal. Scrolls, leaves and small roses climb the sides, and they rise to an openwork crest of curling shells and flowers. A large open flower sits at the base of the frame. Below it, two scrolled arms curve out to hold leaf-edged drip pans and urn-shaped candle cups. The frames are cut right through in many places, so the wall shows between the scrolls. That keeps a richly decorated frame light to look at.

The sconces are in good condition. The mirror plates show the soft spotting of age, which suits their character. They have never been drilled for wiring, so they remain true candle sconces. Hung either side of a fireplace or a doorway, with tapers lit at dusk, they will double the candlelight as they were made to do.

In short, this is a vintage pair of Rococo style mirror candle sconces. They have pierced gilt metal frames with roses, bevelled mirror plates and two candles each. Each is 41 cm tall, and they are exactly as pictured.

DETAILS

Size: Height 41 cm (16.1 in); width 20 cm (7.9 in); depth 9 cm (3.5 in) each.
