With the lights on, they give the soft glow of candlelight without the flame.

Each sconce has a tapering back plate in gilt metal, with a small pointed finial at the top and a turned urn-shaped finial below. Two C-shaped scrolled arms curve out on either side. Each arm ends in a round drip pan edged with tiny beads, a ribbed collar and a cream candle sleeve. The row of small beads around each drip pan is called beading, or pearling. It is one of the clearest marks of Louis XVI style, used on furniture, silver and lighting from the 1770s onward.

The sconces are in very good vintage condition, with a warm, even gilt tone. They come to you after careful keeping, and they deserve the same. Hang them either side of a mirror, a fireplace or a bed, or along a hallway.

To recap: a pair of two-arm wall sconces in gilt metal, with scrolled arms, beaded drip pans and cream candle sleeves.

DETAILS

Size: Height 50 cm (19.7 in), including bulbs · Width 30 cm (11.8 in), per sconce — a little shorter than a carry-on suitcase
Material: gilt metal
Style-Period: Louis XVI style · early to mid 20th century
Shipping: professionally packed, fully insured, worldwide · we handle the paperwork and pay all import duties · nothing to settle on delivery
Electrical: fully rewired in our workshop before dispatch · delivered working and ready to install · wall installation by a qualified electrician recommended
Condition: very good vintage condition
Lampshade: Sold without shades — small clip-on shades suit them
Returns: accepted within 30 days
Sold as a pair
