vintage-1970s-gold-tone-wall-sconce-with-36773
Vintage 1970s Gold-Tone Wall Sconce with White Saucer-Shaped Glass Shade

A milky white saucer of glass floats on a slender gold-tone stem, held out from the wall on a crisp square bracket. This sconce has the playful, futuristic charm of 1970s design and gives a soft, diffused glow.

A tall rectangular gold-tone backplate carries a square-section arm, which turns upward into a narrow stem. The stem flares into a trumpet-shaped cup pierced with a ring of slots. The cup holds a wide, rounded shade of white glass shaped like a low dome, or a saucer seen from the side. The shape caught on fast after 1947, when a pilot's report of objects skimming "like a saucer" over water gave the world the phrase "flying saucer". Space Age designers borrowed the silhouette for everything from chairs to lamps.

The sconce is in very good vintage condition, with a bright gold-tone finish. The white glass shade is a later replacement, not the original, and shows a few light marks. The old wiring reaches us as found, and it will be fully rewired in our workshop, ready for years of soft light. Hang it beside a bed, in a hallway or as one of a pair either side of a mirror.

Saucer sconce: a vintage 1970s gold-tone wall sconce with a square bracket, a pierced trumpet cup and a white saucer-shaped glass shade (a later replacement), rewired in our workshop and ready to install.

DETAILS

Size: H 20 cm (7.9 in) · D 21 cm (8.3 in) · shade Ø 17 cm (6.7 in), H 10 cm (3.9 in) · about the size of a salad bowl
Material: gold-tone metal, white glass shade
Style-Period: Mid-Century Modern · 1970s
Shipping: professionally packed, fully insured, worldwide · we handle the paperwork and pay all import duties · nothing to settle on delivery
Electrical: fully rewired in our workshop before dispatch · delivered working and ready to install · wall installation by a qualified electrician recommended
Condition: very good vintage condition · glass shade is a later replacement, with a few light marks
Lampshade: Glass shade included (replacement, not original)
Returns: accepted within 30 days
Sold as: a single sconce
