vintage-art-deco-footed-bowl-silver-tone-39732
Vintage Art Deco Footed Bowl, Silver-Tone Metal Coupe on Pedestal with Fan Flower Panels and Chevron Borders, 20 cm

When the great decorative arts exhibition opened in Paris in 1925, it gave a name to a style already sweeping through European design. Art Deco took the flowers and curves of the generation before and disciplined them into geometry: fans, chevrons, stepped lines and crisp repeating borders. Everyday tableware was transformed, and even a simple bowl could carry the energy of the modern age.

This footed bowl, or coupe, is a fine expression of that style. A wide, straight-sided bowl rises on a slender stem above a fluted, flaring foot. Around the bowl runs a series of panels, each holding a stylized fan-shaped flower against a finely textured ground, between bands of chevron ornament at the rim and around the foot. The French call this kind of small pedestal foot a piedouche; it was designed to raise a bowl so that whatever it held was presented at the eye level of seated guests. The bright silver-tone surface catches the light across every panel and flute.

The bowl reaches us in good overall condition, with a gentle patina of use and areas where the silver-tone finish has worn to show a warm golden tone beneath, particularly on the stem and foot. That wear gives it an honest, lived-in warmth. It makes a striking centerpiece on a dining table or sideboard, holding a few pieces of fruit or simply standing on its own.

In short, this is a vintage Art Deco footed bowl in silver-tone metal, with fan-flower panels, chevron borders and a fluted pedestal foot, 20 cm in diameter.
