vintage-art-deco-l-carvin-spelter-german-18436
Vintage Art Deco L. Carvin Spelter German Shepherd Dog Sculpture, Signed on Collar, Reclining on Sienna and Portoro Marble Base

Ears pricked, mouth open and tongue lolling, this German Shepherd lies stretched across a stepped marble base, relaxed but alert, as if he’s just heard his name called. His back legs fold beneath him and his bushy tail curls off the edge of the lower step. The modelling captures the breed perfectly: the deep chest, the strong shoulders and the thick ruff of fur at the neck. Louis-Albert Carvin, a French animalier sculptor known for his lifelike dogs and wild animals, signed the piece on the dog’s collar. It’s cast in spelter with a warm bronze patina, rubbed to gold on the high points, and set on a two-tier base of golden Sienna marble topped with black-and-gold Portoro. It’s a striking piece for a mantel or desk, and a heartfelt gift for any shepherd owner.

Condition: Good Vintage Condition, with natural wear to the patina, small surface marks and light wear to the marble edges, consistent with age, as pictured.

Dimensions & Materials

Width: 14.4 in (36.5 cm)
Height: 10.8 in (27.5 cm)
Depth: 7.1 in (18 cm)
Material: Bronze-patinated spelter (régule), Sienna and Portoro marble base
Includes: One sculpture on marble base

Historical Period: Art Deco; circa 1920s–1930s.

Shipping & Duties: Every piece is hand-wrapped, securely packed and fully insured for its journey to you, wherever you are in the world.
