vintage-basket-weave-vide-poche-with-31974
Vintage Basket-Weave Vide-Poche with Snail and Ear of Wheat, Patinated Metal Woven Dish with Twin Handles, 11 cm

Around 1900, French workshops liked to cast humble country objects in metal. A wicker basket, an ear of wheat or a garden snail, all things anyone might find on a farm, were turned into small, lasting ornaments for the town house. A pocket-emptying dish shaped as a little harvest basket brought a touch of the countryside to a hall table or a dressing table.

This vide-poche is cast as an oval wicker basket, its sides and floor modelled in radiating rows of woven strands. A small loop handle rises at each end. Across the basket lies a long ear of wheat, its grains and stalk crisply detailed, and a snail makes its slow way along the rim and into the dish. The metal has a warm, even brown patina, with the high points of the weave picked out in a lighter tone.

The dish is in excellent condition. It fits in the palm of your hand and works well as a home for rings, keys or coins, or as a small curiosity on a desk or a shelf.

In short, this is a vintage basket-weave vide-poche in patinated metal, with a snail and an ear of wheat in relief and twin loop handles. It measures 11 × 8 cm and is exactly as pictured.

DETAILS

Size: 11 × 8 cm (4.3 × 3.1 in).
