vintage-brass-vide-poche-dish-with-wave-65638
Vintage Brass Vide-Poche Dish with Wave and Sun Relief, Modernist Abstract Seascape Catchall, Cross Emblem, 14 cm

The French have a perfect name for the small dish that waits by the door or on the dresser: the vide-poche, the "empty-pocket," where keys, coins and rings are set down at the end of the day. In the second half of the last century, designers took this humble object seriously, giving it the same attention as a small sculpture, because it was something people touched every single day.

This brass dish is a fine example. Its shallow round surface is worked in low relief with an abstract seascape: long, sweeping lines rolling across the dish like waves, with a half-disc of sun rising, or setting, at the horizon. In one corner sits a small circular emblem enclosing a cross. Low relief, in which the design is raised only slightly from the surface, depends on light falling across it. As the light moves through the day, the waves seem to shift and the sun to glow. The warm brass gives the whole scene a sunlit tone.

The dish reaches us in good overall condition, with a natural patina and small surface marks from years of use. It is the kind of object that becomes part of a daily ritual, and it is ready to begin a new one. It belongs on a hall table for keys, or on a nightstand or dressing table for rings and watches.

In short, this is a vintage brass vide-poche dish with a modernist wave-and-sun relief and a small cross emblem, 14 cm in diameter. It is exactly as pictured.

DETAILS

Size: Diameter 14 cm (5.5 in).
