Seen on the Erechtheion on the Acropolis, it alternates a heart-shaped leaf with a narrow pointed dart. The French call it raie de cœur, “heart ray”. Empire designers loved it for its crisp rhythm, and they used it to edge furniture, mirror frames and candlesticks with a touch of classical precision.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis candlestick, attributed to the late nineteenth century and in the Empire style, carries that border alongside other classical ornament. A round base with a band of leaf moulding rises through a ringed foot to a rounded knop and a slender column. The middle of the column is worked with a fine diagonal knurling. Above and below it sit narrow bands of heart-and-dart ornament and rows of tiny beads. At the top, a flaring cup with a beaded drip pan holds a drip-effect candle sleeve. The candlestick has been converted into a table lamp, with a bulb holder fitted above the sleeve.
