vintage-figural-bird-salt-or-pepper-74379
Vintage Figural Bird Salt or Pepper Shaker, Silver-Tone Metal with Finely Chased-Look Feathers, Small Table Sculpture, 7 cm

From the late nineteenth century onward, dining tables across Europe were brightened by figural casters: small salt and pepper shakers shaped like birds, owls, chicks and other animals. They were made to amuse guests as much as to season food. Placed in a row along a long table, a little flock of them turned a practical object into a talking point, and many families collected them over the years.

This shaker is a small bird, plump and alert, with its head turned slightly and its tail angled up behind it. Its whole body is covered in finely worked feathers: rows of overlapping scale-like plumes on the breast, long lined feathers along the wings, and delicate strokes around the eye and the beak. It stands on a small oval base. The silver-tone finish is bright and catches the light along every feather.

The shaker is in good condition, with no defects noted. It is light and small enough to hold in one hand. It works as a salt or pepper shaker at the table, or simply as a charming little bird sculpture on a shelf, a desk or a windowsill.

In short, this is a vintage figural bird salt or pepper shaker in silver-tone metal, with finely detailed feathers. It is 7 cm long, weighs 24 g, and is exactly as pictured.

DETAILS

Size: Length 7 cm (2.8 in); height 5.2 cm (2 in).
