vintage-framed-coloured-tiger-engraving-59904
Vintage Framed Coloured Tiger Engraving, Natural History Print Attributed to the 19th Century, Black Frame and Ochre Mat, 32 × 26 cm

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Europeans were fascinated by the animals of distant lands. Great natural history books brought tigers, lions and elephants into libraries and drawing rooms through finely detailed illustrations. Many of these plates were engravings, with the image cut as fine lines into a metal plate, then printed and often coloured afterwards. Today they are admired as small works of art in their own right.

This framed print, attributed to the nineteenth century, comes from that tradition. A tiger lies stretched out on rocky ground in the foreground, head raised and alert, while a second tiger stands on a rise behind, looking back. Palm trees and a pale sky set the scene. The fine engraved lines give texture to the fur, the rocks and the landscape, and soft colour brings warmth to the tigers’ striped coats. The print is set in an ochre mat that echoes the tigers’ colouring, inside a slim black frame.

The print is in good condition, as pictured. It makes a handsome piece for a study, a library or a hallway, and a fine gift for anyone who loves wildlife or natural history.

In short, this is a vintage framed coloured engraving of two tigers in a natural history style, attributed to the nineteenth century.
