Wealthy gentlemen bought their own four-horse coaches and drove them through London’s parks and out along the country roads, handling all four horses from the box seat. This sport was called coaching, and a skilled driver was known as a “whip.” Sporting artists recorded these elegant outings, and their pictures became popular prints.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis framed print is captioned “The Right Sort.” It shows a smart coach and four bowling along a park road, with a team of chestnut, bay and black horses at a brisk trot. The coach is painted yellow and black, and its roof is crowded with gentlemen in top hats and frock coats, enjoying the drive. Riders follow on horseback, and a tall street lamp and a statue in the background suggest a city park. The print is set within a pale blue mat with fine ruled lines, inside a warm wood frame. On the back is the label of A. Pautrat, a Paris framer and gilder of paintings and engravings, at 37 rue de Constantinople.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe print is in good condition for its age, with a gentle patina.
