vintage-geometric-modernist-desk-23611
Vintage Geometric Modernist Desk Sculpture, Black Stone Blocks with Mixed Metal Rods, Trophy Style Skyline Form, 34 cm

In the later twentieth century, the executive desk and the boardroom shelf became unexpected galleries for abstract sculpture. Companies and clubs commissioned awards that looked less like cups and more like small works of architecture, built from stone and polished metal in bold geometric forms. They were made to be displayed with pride, and many have outlived the occasions they marked to become striking objects in their own right.

This trophy-style sculpture belongs to that tradition. Two square blocks of black stone, veined with white, are stacked one above the other and joined by a polished cylinder of brass-tone metal. From the top block rises a cluster of upright rods and bars of varying heights, in brass, copper, silver and dark tones, with a small curved element and a cube set among them. The composition reads like a miniature city skyline. It relies on what architects call massing, balancing tall and short forms against one another so that the whole has rhythm and weight. The contrast of dark stone and bright metal gives the piece real presence.

The sculpture reaches us in good overall condition, as pictured. It is a piece with a strong personality, and it will give character to a desk, a study or an office shelf where it can be seen from all sides. It works especially well against a plain wall, where the rods' outline reads clearly.

In short, this is a vintage geometric modernist sculpture of stacked black stone blocks and mixed-metal rods in trophy style, 34 cm tall. It is exactly as pictured.

4.
