Lighting makers produced classic “style” lanterns for entrances and corridors, modelled on eighteenth-century designs but sized for modern hallways. They brought a little period elegance to the first room a visitor saw.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis hall lantern, attributed to the 1960s–70s, is one of those. A cylinder of curved clear glass is held between two gilt metal bands, decorated with fine vertical lines, and joined by slim reeded uprights. Above, scrolled arms curve up to a central rod and a decorative chain, which hangs from a leafy, shell-like ceiling canopy. Below, a leafy boss sits at the centre of the base, and small acorn-shaped drops hang from each upright. The acorn, fruit of the mighty oak, has long stood for strength and long life in European decoration. Inside, two candle-style lights glow through the glass.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe lantern is in good condition. It has just been taken down and has not yet been cleaned, so it carries a light film of dust and patina. Like every lamp we sell, it is checked in our workshop before it is sent, so it arrives ready to install.
