vintage-hexagonal-brass-hall-lantern-with-23135
Vintage Hexagonal Brass Hall Lantern with Bevelled Glass Panels and Domed Rib Top, Single Light, Chain and Canopy

In Georgian England, the entrance halls of town houses were lit by tall hexagonal lanterns hung on chains from the ceiling. Their tops were made of curved metal ribs that met at a central point, often under a small dish called a smoke bell. The smoke bell caught the soot rising from the candle before it could blacken the ceiling. Bulbs have long since replaced candles, but the ribbed, domed outline has remained a classic.

This hexagonal hall lantern follows that Georgian form. Six tall glass panels with bevelled edges are held in a slim brass frame, tapering gently towards the base. Above them, six curved brass ribs rise to a central collar, forming an open dome. A single bulb hangs at the centre, so light passes evenly through every pane. The bevelled edges catch the light along each side of the frame. The lantern hangs from a brass chain with a plain bell-shaped ceiling canopy.

The lantern is in good vintage condition, with signs of use and some wear to the brass finish. One pane has a small chip that is barely visible, as pictured. Like every lamp we sell, it is checked in our workshop before it is sent, so it arrives ready to install. It suits an entrance hall, a stairwell or a landing.

In short, this is a vintage hexagonal brass hall lantern with bevelled glass panels and a domed rib top, with a single light, a chain and a canopy. It measures 23 × 30 cm and is exactly as pictured.

DETAILS

Size: 23 × 30 cm (9.1 × 11.8 in); overall drop about 50 cm (19.7 in) with chain and canopy.
