They used glossy lacquer, bold contrasts and crisp geometric frames to create rooms full of glamour. The look, known as Hollywood Regency, returned with great success in the 1970s, when designers brought its drama into private homes.

This table lamp is attributed to the 1970s and is in the Hollywood Regency style. Its tall body has canted corners and rises from a stepped black base to a matching stepped top. Each side is finished in glossy black lacquer with amber panels that have a rich tortoiseshell-like pattern. Fine pale lines frame the panels in a geometric design, with a tall cartouche shape at the centre. A brass-tone stem holds the bulb fitting at the top.

The lamp is in good condition, with a few very small chips to the lacquer.
