vintage-hunting-dog-sculpture-following-a-73925
Vintage Hunting Dog Sculpture Following a Scent, Patinated Metal Hound on Beige Marble Base, 20.5 cm

A good hunting dog works with its nose. A hound can pick up a trail hours old and follow it across fields and through woods, its head low and its whole body tensed toward the scent. Sporting sculptors loved this moment, the dog moving slowly forward with one paw lifted mid-step, because it shows a working animal at its most focused.

This sculpture captures exactly that. A lean hound with long, soft ears and a collar around its neck moves forward with its head lowered and its nose reaching ahead. The right foreleg is raised and bent, and the tail is held out straight behind as a counterweight. The ribs, shoulders and leg muscles are clearly modelled, giving the figure a lively, athletic feel. The metal has a warm brown patina, with lighter copper tones showing on the high points where it has worn. The dog stands on a rectangular slab of beige marble, flecked with paler markings.

The base has two small holes, which suggest it was once part of a lamp or a desk set. The hound now stands on its own as a decorative piece, as pictured. At 1.42 kg it sits firmly in place, and it makes a fine paperweight or desk companion for a study, a library or a hunting lodge.

In short, this is a vintage sculpture of a hunting dog following a scent, in patinated metal on a beige marble base. The base is 20.5 cm long, the sculpture weighs 1.42 kg, and it is exactly as pictured.

DETAILS

Size: Base 20.5 × 10.5 × 2 cm (8.1 × 4.1 × 0.8 in).
