vintage-large-empire-style-torch-wall-88005
Vintage Large Empire Style Torch Wall Sconce, Gold-Tone Metal Scrolled Arm with Frosted Glass Flame Shade, Attributed 19th Century, 58 cm

The torch was one of the great symbols of the Empire style. In ancient Greece, runners carried flaming torches in relay races, and a torch held aloft stood for victory, enlightenment and life passed from one generation to the next. Napoleon’s designers put torches everywhere, on furniture, clocks and wall lights. When electricity arrived, makers kept the idea alive by moulding glass into the shape of a leaping flame.

This large wall sconce is built around that image. A slender gold-tone arm sweeps out from the wall in a long, elegant curve, ending in a tight decorative spiral where it meets the wall bracket. It rises to a ribbed collar and a flaring trumpet-shaped holder topped with a gadrooned rim. From this rises a shade of frosted glass moulded as a tall, flickering flame. When lit, it glows like a real torch. The arm’s bold curve and generous projection give the sconce real presence on a wall.

The sconce is in good condition. The glass flame has a small, discreet hole at its tip, probably made to let heat escape, as pictured. It is substantial, with the metalwork alone weighing over 2.6 kg. Our workshop will fit a suitable wall fixing before dispatch. Like every lamp we sell, it is checked there too, so it arrives ready to use. It makes a dramatic light for a hallway, a stairwell or a high-ceilinged room.

In short, this is a vintage large Empire style torch wall sconce, with a gold-tone metal scrolled arm and a frosted glass flame shade, attributed to the nineteenth century. It is 58 cm tall overall and exactly as pictured.

DETAILS

Size:

Overall height 58 cm (22.8 in)
Projection from the wall 35 cm (13.8 in)
Glass flame 21 cm (8.3 in) tall, 9 cm (3.5 in) at the base

About the length of a standard bed pillow.

Material: Gold-tone metal; frosted glass flame shade
Style-Period: Empire style; vintage, attributed to the nineteenth century
Weight: Over 2.6 kg (5.7 lb), metalwork without shade
Shipping: Professionally packed, fully insured, worldwide.
