vintage-large-louis-xv-style-gilt-metal-44092
Vintage Large Louis XV Style Gilt Metal Candlestick, Attributed 19th Century, Relief Insects Among Flowering Branches, 31.5 cm

The Rococo age was also an age of naturalists. Collectors filled cabinets of curiosities with shells, butterflies and beetles, and scientists catalogued every plant and creature they could find. Decorative artists caught the same fever. They covered their work with flowers, leaves and even insects, modelled so realistically that they seem to have just landed on the surface.

This large candlestick, attributed to the nineteenth century, is a wonderful example of that playful naturalism. Its broad, domed base is crowded with flowering branches, shell-like scrolls and leafy sprays. Among them, small insects with outstretched wings appear to have settled on the metal, waiting to be discovered by anyone who looks closely. Above, a twisting baluster stem, covered in scrolls and leaves, rises to a vase-shaped section and a flower-edged bobèche at the top. The gilt finish is warm and rich, with deeper tones in the recesses.

The candlestick is in good condition for its age, with the marks you would expect. The top is fitted with a threaded rod from an earlier lamp conversion, and the original candle nozzle is not present. It has a strong presence on its own, on a mantelpiece, a console or in a collector’s cabinet, where its hidden insects can be enjoyed up close.

In short, this is a vintage large Louis XV style candlestick in gilt metal, with relief insects among flowering branches, attributed to the nineteenth century.
