vintage-louis-xv-rocaille-style-gilt-92889
Vintage Louis XV Rocaille Style Gilt Metal Chamberstick, Hand Candle Holder with Scrolled Handle, 23 cm

The chamberstick takes its name from the bedchamber. It was the candle a person carried through dark corridors and up the stairs at night, so it was built for walking: a short, steady candle holder set in a wide tray, with a handle to hold it by. The tray’s raised edge caught any wax that dripped as you moved, keeping it off your hand and the floor.

This chamberstick is in the Louis XV Rocaille style. Its shaped tray is edged with curling scrolls and ribbed, shell-like ornament, and it stands on small scrolled feet. At the centre rises an urn-shaped candle cup with a finely textured, petal-edged rim. At the back, a tall scrolled handle sweeps upward, decorated with leaves and a small beaded detail, shaped so that your fingers fit naturally around it. The gilt finish is warm and bright, picking out every curve.

The chamberstick is in good condition, with light signs of age. It can still be carried with a lit candle, or it can sit on a console, a nightstand or a windowsill, where a single flame brings out the gilt relief.

In short, this is a vintage Louis XV Rocaille style chamberstick in gilt metal, with a scrolled handle and a shaped tray. It is 23 cm long, weighs 304 g, and is exactly as pictured.

DETAILS

Size: Length 23 cm (9.1 in); height 6.5 cm (2.6 in).
