vintage-louis-xv-style-mirror-wall-89337
Vintage Louis XV Style Mirror Wall Sconce, Rocaille Frame with Small Mirror Plate, Two Candle Lights, 51 cm

For much of the seventeenth century, fine mirror glass came almost only from Venice, and it was fabulously expensive. In 1665 France set up its own royal glassworks to break that monopoly, and within twenty years French glass was lining the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. Mirrors spread through French interiors, and makers began setting small mirror plates into wall lights to throw their glow back into the room.

This wall sconce carries on that idea. At its centre sits a small shaped mirror plate, framed by a richly cast Rocaille surround of scrolls, leaves and small flowers. Above, the frame rises to a pierced crest, and below, it trails down in a long, curling tail. Two arms, covered in feathered leaves, sweep out from the base of the mirror to hold star-shaped bobèches, embossed candle cups and drip-effect candle sleeves. The metal has a warm, dark patina that brings out the depth of the casting.

The sconce is in very good condition. The mirror glass shows some soft spotting from age, which suits the character of the piece. It is substantial, weighing 2.28 kg, and it makes a striking feature in a salon, a dining room or a hallway.

In short, this is a vintage Louis XV style mirror wall sconce, with a Rocaille frame around a small mirror plate and two candle lights.
