vintage-miniature-pointer-dog-figure-31670
Vintage Miniature Pointer Dog Figure, Dark Patinated Metal Hunting Dog in Mid-Stride, Attributed 19th Century, 9.5 cm

The German Shorthaired Pointer was developed in nineteenth-century Germany as an all-round hunting companion. Breeders wanted one dog that could find game by scent, point it, retrieve from land or water, and keep working all day. The French call this family of pointing dogs braques. Their lean, athletic build and alert expression made them a favourite subject for sculptors of sporting animals.

This miniature figure captures a pointer in motion. The dog strides forward with its head lifted and its nose raised to the air, as if it has just caught a scent on the breeze. Its legs are spread in a natural walking gait and its tail is held out level behind. Even at this small scale the modelling is detailed: the soft, folded ears, the muscles of the shoulders and haunches, and a fine texture suggesting the short coat. The figure stands freely on its own four feet, with no base. The dark brown patina has worn to a lighter, greyish tone on the high points.

The figure is in good condition, with a natural patina. Small enough to rest in the palm of your hand, it makes a charming piece for a desk, a collector’s cabinet or a bookshelf, and a thoughtful gift for anyone who loves hunting dogs.

In short, this is a vintage miniature pointer dog figure in dark patinated metal, shown in mid-stride and attributed to the nineteenth century.
