Makers answered with a wave of Rococo revival furniture and lighting, and the scrolls and shells of the eighteenth century found a whole new audience.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis pair of wall sconces, attributed to the nineteenth century, is in that Louis XV Rocaille style. Each one rises from a pointed leafy tail into a tall, curling flame of acanthus leaves. Two slender arms branch out with their own small scrolls and leaves, ending in petal-edged bobèches with leafy candle cups and drip-effect sleeves. The two sconces were designed en pendant, the French term for a pair made as matching opposites, so that each one curves the other way and they mirror one another across a mirror, a doorway or a fireplace.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe gilt surface has dulled with time and would benefit from a gentle clean, which will bring back its warmth.
