A writing box held paper, pens and ink, and folded open to make a sloped writing surface on any table, at home or on the road. In France under Napoléon III, these boxes were often richly decorated, with glossy veneers, fine stringing and ornate inlaid centrepieces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis writing box is attributed to the nineteenth century and is in the Napoléon III style. The outside is covered in a warm burl-effect veneer, framed with fine lines of stringing, and the front has a decorative inlaid cartouche at its centre. The top lid lifts to reveal a compartment for papers. When opened out, the box forms a writing slope, a surface tilted at just the right angle for writing comfortably with pen and ink. The writing surface itself lifts to give access to a storage space below.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe box is in good condition for its age. It shows signs of use, light wear and small losses along some of the stringing, and there is a cut in the lining of the writing surface. The lock is present, but there is no key.
