vintage-pair-of-brass-candlesticks-60862
Vintage Pair of Brass Candlesticks, Restauration Style Baluster Stems on Domed Round Bases, Attributed 19th Century, 28 cm

After the fall of Napoleon, the French Restauration years favoured a quieter, more domestic version of the grand Empire style. Ornament was pared back, and many everyday objects relied on clean profiles and well-turned shapes rather than applied decoration. Plain brass candlesticks in this manner were made in large numbers for bourgeois homes, where they were polished weekly and stood on every mantelpiece.

This pair has that clean, turned profile. Each stands on a broad, domed round base, stepped with fine incised rings. A short trumpet-shaped foot rises to an urn-shaped knop, and above it a long, gently swelling column is framed by moulded collars. At the top, a second urn-shaped candle cup is finished with a wide, flat rim. There is no applied ornament: the beauty is in the turning and the proportions. The brass has a bright, warm shine.

The candlesticks are in good condition for their age, with small knocks and patches of wear. Each base has been drilled with a small hole, probably from an earlier conversion to a lamp, and there is a small spot of verdigris on one base, as pictured. They make a classic, versatile pair for a mantelpiece, a dining table or a sideboard.

In short, this is a vintage pair of Restauration style brass candlesticks, with baluster stems on domed round bases, attributed to the nineteenth century. Each is 28 cm tall, and they are exactly as pictured.

DETAILS

Size: Height 28 cm (11 in) each.
