vintage-pair-of-dutch-style-wall-sconces-13934
Vintage Pair of Dutch Style Wall Sconces, Gilt Metal Ball Body with Dragon-Head Scroll Arms, Two Candle Lights Each

The great brass lights of seventeenth-century Holland and Flanders are among the most recognisable designs in European lighting. With their polished ball bodies and curving arms, they appear in many Dutch Golden Age paintings, and they have been made and admired ever since. Baroque makers loved to finish the arms with the heads of mythical beasts, whose long, curving necks followed the natural line of the scroll.

This pair of wall sconces is in that Dutch style. Each one has a central body with a turned baluster above a large round ball, crowned by a hanging ring and finished with a small drop below. Two scrolled arms curve out to each side, and each arm is shaped with the crested head of a dragon, its neck sweeping round into the curve. The arms hold wide round bobèches with candle-style sleeves. The warm gilt finish brings out the shine of the ball and the detail of the dragon heads.

The sconces are in good vintage condition. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They suit a dining room, a hallway or a traditional living room, especially on either side of a fireplace.

In short, this is a vintage pair of Dutch style wall sconces in gilt metal, with ball bodies, dragon-head scroll arms and two candle lights each.
