vintage-pair-of-louis-xv-rocaille-style-07417
Vintage Pair of Louis XV Rocaille Style Brass Wall Sconces, Mirror-Image Scrolled Arms with Shell Bobèches, Two Lights Each, 37 cm

In the age of candlelight, every candle holder needed a bobèche: a small dish around the candle that caught the dripping wax before it could spoil the metal or the floor. When candles gave way to electric bulbs, the bobèche was no longer needed, but designers kept it as an ornament, because it gave a wall light its graceful, finished look.

This pair of wall sconces is in the Louis XV Rocaille style and makes the most of that tradition. Each one is a flowing composition of brass scrolls and acanthus leaves, rising from a pointed leaf tip at the base. Two curving arms reach out and up, each ending in a wide bobèche shaped like an opening shell or flower, with a small leafy cup above for the candle-style light. In true Rocaille fashion, each sconce is asymmetrical, and the pair is made as mirror images, so they balance perfectly either side of a mirror, a bed or a fireplace.

The sconces are in good condition, with a warm patina on the brass and light oxidation in places. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They bring classic French elegance to a bedroom, a salon or a hallway.

In short, this is a vintage mirror-image pair of Louis XV Rocaille style brass wall sconces, with scrolled arms, shell bobèches and two lights each.
