vintage-pair-of-louis-xv-rocaille-style-57246
Vintage Pair of Louis XV Rocaille Style Wall Sconces, Cast Metal with Green Patina, Shell Crest and Pierced Scroll Arms, Two Lights Each

The great Rocaille designs of eighteenth-century Paris did not stay in the palaces. Foundries across France and the rest of Europe copied and adapted them for generations, so that the shells, scrolls and acanthus leaves of the court found their way onto the walls of town houses, country homes and farmhouses. Each foundry added its own touches, and many of these provincial pieces have a lively, robust character of their own.

This pair of wall sconces is in that Louis XV Rocaille tradition. Each backplate is crowned with a scallop shell and a curling leafy crest, and is decorated down its length with scrolls and small beaded ornaments, ending in a leafy tail. Two arms curve out from a central band, each supported underneath by an openwork scroll bracket set with small rosettes. They end in wide, leafy bobèches with candle-style sleeves. The metal has developed a soft greenish patina, the same natural process that turned the copper of the Statue of Liberty green over time.

The sconces are in good vintage condition, as pictured. We have left their green patina untouched, since it gives them much of their character. They look especially at home in a country-style dining room, a garden room or a farmhouse hallway.

In short, this is a vintage pair of Louis XV Rocaille style wall sconces in cast metal with a green patina, each with a shell crest, pierced scroll arms and two lights.
