vintage-pair-of-louis-xv-style-35415
Vintage Pair of Louis XV Style Single-Light Wall Sconces, Gilt Metal Leafy Scroll Backplates with Fluted Bobèches, 22 cm

In French homes, small single-light sconces were the quiet workhorses of the household. They flanked doorways, lit narrow corridors and hung either side of bedroom mirrors, giving just enough light where it was needed. Because they were used every day, they were made to be robust, but they were never plain.

This pair of wall sconces is in the Louis XV style. Each backplate is a flowing leafy scroll, curling into a tight curl at the top and sweeping down into a long, graceful tail. From the middle, a single curved arm rises to a bobèche shaped with a scalloped, scrolled rim and a finely fluted interior, holding a white drip-effect candle sleeve. The gilt finish is warm, with deeper tones in the recesses.

The sconces are in good condition and would benefit from a final gentle clean to brighten them. Gilt surfaces should be cleaned with only a soft brush and a little mild soapy water, never metal polish, which can wear away the thin layer of gilding. They are a natural choice for either side of a door in an entrance hall, or beside a bedroom mirror.

In short, this is a vintage pair of Louis XV style single-light wall sconces in gilt metal, with leafy scroll backplates and fluted bobèches. Each is 22 cm tall, and they are exactly as pictured.

DETAILS

Size: Height 22 cm (8.7 in); depth 12.5 cm (4.9 in) each.
