vintage-pair-of-louis-xv-style-two-light-19926
Vintage Pair of Louis XV Style Two-Light Wall Sconces, Gilt Brass with Openwork Floral Scroll Arms and Leafy Drip Pans, French Wall Lights

In the 1730s, rococo designers broke away from the heavy, symmetrical ornament of the previous reign and brought the garden indoors. Their candlesticks, mirrors and wall lights sprouted sprigs of flowers and curling leaves, as if the metal had been left to grow. For two centuries afterwards, French workshops kept making small wall lights in this lighthearted Louis XV manner, scaled for bedrooms, landings and dressing rooms.

This pair of wall sconces is made in that spirit. Each has a compact central mount topped by two small curling hooks, from which two openwork arms sweep down and out in a deep C-shape. Inside each curve, a sprig of cast flowers and leaves fills the open space, the kind of naturalistic detail the French called rocaille. The arms turn up into vase-shaped candle cups set on leafy, petal-edged drip pans, each holding a tinted candle sleeve with moulded drips.

DETAILS

Size (each): Height about 18.5 cm (7.3 in).
