vintage-pair-of-louis-xv-style-wall-53920
Vintage Pair of Louis XV Style Wall Sconces, Patinated Metal Acanthus Scroll Arms with Cartouche Backplates, Two Lights Each, 29 cm

In nineteenth-century Paris, the Marais district rang with the sound of metalworkers. Dozens of small workshops there cast, chased and finished decorative metalwork: clock cases, door handles, candlesticks and wall lights in every historical style. Many of the classic sconces still found in French homes descend from that busy trade.

This pair of wall sconces is in the Louis XV style. Each has a tall, tapering backplate shaped as a cartouche, decorated with leafy scrolls and a central oval motif, and topped with a small pointed crest. At the base hangs a pointed drop, an ornament French designers call a cul-de-lampe, a term borrowed from architecture for the decorative pendant beneath a bracket or corbel. From a central collar, two arms sweep out in curling acanthus scrolls to hold wide, fluted bobèches and drip-effect candle sleeves. The metal has a deep, mellow patina.

The sconces are in good vintage condition, with some signs of use, as pictured. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They suit a dining room, a hallway or a traditional living room.

In short, this is a vintage pair of Louis XV style wall sconces in patinated metal, with acanthus scroll arms, cartouche backplates and two lights each.
