Lighting makers answered with electric wall lights in the old Louis XV style, and these became a fixture of apartments across France.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis pair of wall sconces, attributed to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, comes from that moment. Each backplate is built from curling acanthus leaves, rising to a tall flame-like crest and sweeping down into a scrolled tail. Two arms curve out from it, each ending in a star-shaped leafy bobèche and an embossed candle cup with a drip-effect sleeve. The two are made as mirror images, so they balance each other on either side of a mirror or fireplace. Each was cast and finished individually, which is why their weights differ slightly: 1.33 kg and 1.38 kg.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe sconces are in good condition, with a warm gilt finish.
