vintage-pair-of-louis-xvi-style-brass-19851
Vintage Pair of Louis XVI Style Brass Wall Sconces, Urn Body with Fluted Bobèches, Two Candle Lights Each, 24 cm

When the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum were uncovered in the eighteenth century, they sparked a wave of enthusiasm for the art of ancient Rome. Under Louis XVI, French designers filled their work with Roman urns, fluted columns and neat classical borders. This calm, balanced style, known as Neoclassical, has stayed a favourite for elegant interiors ever since.

This pair of wall sconces is in that Louis XVI style. Each one has a central body shaped like a classical urn, with ribbed decoration, rising to a small turned finial and tapering below into a fluted point with a round drop. Two scrolled arms reach out to each side, each holding a wide fluted bobèche with a candle-style sleeve. The urn was one of the favourite motifs of Neoclassical design, borrowed from the vases of ancient Rome, and here it gives the sconces a dignified, balanced shape. The brass has a warm golden patina.

The sconces are in good overall condition. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They suit a dining room, a hallway or a classic living room, especially on either side of a fireplace or a mirror.

In short, this is a vintage pair of Louis XVI style brass wall sconces with urn bodies, fluted bobèches and two candle lights each.
