vintage-pair-of-louis-xvi-style-wall-24444
Vintage Pair of Louis XVI Style Wall Sconces, Gilt Metal Fluted Column with Greek Key Band and Pine Cone Drops, Two Lights Each, 30 cm

In the eighteenth century, young European aristocrats finished their education with the Grand Tour, a long journey through Italy to see the ruins of Rome and Naples. They came home with sketches, casts and a passion for antiquity, and that passion shaped the Louis XVI style. Columns, urns and ancient borders moved from temple ruins into French drawing rooms.

This pair of wall sconces is full of those classical borrowings. Each one is built around a short fluted column, topped by a capital with small curled volutes in the manner of an Ionic column, and crowned with a round finial. Below the column, an urn-shaped body is wrapped in a Greek key band, the continuous right-angled pattern also called a meander. It takes its name from the Maeander, a famously winding river in ancient Asia Minor. Acanthus leaves curl beneath the band, and small pine cone drops hang below. Two scrolled arms reach out to beaded bobèches with drip-effect candle sleeves.

The sconces are in good condition, with a warm gilt finish. Each weighs 1.2 kg, so they feel solid and well made. They suit a dining room, a library or a classic hallway, especially on either side of a doorway or a bookcase.

In short, this is a vintage pair of Louis XVI style wall sconces in gilt metal, with fluted columns, Greek key bands, pine cone drops and two lights each. Each measures 30 × 30 cm, and they are exactly as pictured.

DETAILS

Size: Height 30 cm (11.8 in); width 30 cm (11.8 in); depth 13.5 cm (5.3 in) each.
