vintage-pair-of-rococo-louis-xv-style-35535
Vintage Pair of Rococo Louis XV Style Single-Light Wall Sconces, Gilt Metal Acanthus Scrolls, Candle Lights, 22 cm

The word Rococo is a playful blend of the French rocaille, the shell and rockwork decoration of garden grottoes, and the Italian barocco. It was first used by later critics to tease what they saw as an over-decorated style. But the light, curling ornament of the Louis XV period has outlived its critics, and it remains one of the most loved styles in French decorative art.

This pair of wall sconces is in that Rococo Louis XV style. Each one has a narrow backplate cast with curling acanthus leaves, which sweep up and down in a lively S-shape. A single curved arm reaches out from the leaves to hold a round, decorated bobèche and a fluted candle cup, topped with a white candle-style sleeve. Each sconce has a single light and a slim shape, which makes them ideal for narrow walls, either side of a mirror, or a hallway.

The sconces are in good vintage condition, with a warm gilt patina. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They suit an entrance hall, a corridor, a bedroom or a classic salon.

In short, this is a vintage pair of Rococo Louis XV style single-light wall sconces in gilt metal, with acanthus scrolls and candle lights.
