vintage-pair-of-rococo-style-mirror-wall-25459
Vintage Pair of Rococo Style Mirror Wall Sconces, Gilt Metal Cartouche Frames with Two Lights Each, 33 cm

In eighteenth-century England, a looking glass fitted with candle arms was called a girandole. The name came from the Italian girandola, a spinning firework wheel, a fitting comparison for a mirror that seemed to multiply the sparkle of every flame. Across Europe, these mirrored lights became a favourite way to brighten a room after dark.

This pair of mirror wall sconces follows that idea. Each has an oval mirror plate set in a gilt metal cartouche frame, decorated with scrolls, leaves and small flowers, and crowned with a shield-like crest. From a single boss below the mirror, two slender arms curve out and up in a graceful S-shape, ending in wide bobèches embossed with flowers and leaves, each holding a candle-style light. Because both lights stand in front of the glass, their reflections appear inside the mirror, so each sconce seems to glow twice.

The sconces are in good condition, with a warm gilt finish. Each pair weighs 3.1 kg, so they feel solid. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They suit a salon, a dining room or either side of a fireplace.

In short, this is a vintage pair of Rococo style mirror wall sconces in gilt metal, with cartouche frames and two lights each.
